One of the most important, and sometimes hardest elements of a good branding plan is to stay consistent across all your marketing channels and points of customer interaction.  Think about who your audience is. Marketing should generally always be framed from the point of view of your audience. Whether B2B or B2c, the specific industry, who your customers are, who your competitors are all have an impact on how your branding should be constructed.  Clearly document the average customer, why they buy from you, what your competitive advantages are over peers, and the type of person – if b2b, that makes the purchasing decision.

The messaging and visual tone that you develop can greatly help your brand or weigh it down. The more you understand why your customers buy from you, the better, as that helps you to decide on how to develop your brand’s identity.

The visuals of your brand are typically the most striking and memorable, as most people retain images better than text. Everything from your website, web store, business cards, brochures, emails, social media postings, and logo is a part of your visual identity.  You want them to stand out, from competitors and make a positive mark, not a negative one.  If your website looks like it was from 2003, and your competitor’s websites are much more modern designs, prospective customers seeing your website will be a negative, not a positive.

Again, any content marketing, whether video content marketing or static traditional content marketing should be made to fit within your brand’s visual theme.

Consider at minimum a few pieces of video content that can be repurposed for a variety of marketing uses such as email, your website, social media, and even broadcast or digital paid channels.

Using customer reviews in sales meetings and featuring some on your website is a great way to build trust with incoming website visitors and increase the number of meetings booked.

Which social media channels you use depend on your niche and industry, but Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube are major assets for nearly any company. If your competitors are active on social media and you aren’t…. well, that’s a major problem. Social media marketing doesn’t have to be hard. Even just talking behind the scenes photos, product photos, showing new offers, etc on posts that stay within your brand guidelines will generate shares and potentially business.

How to Create Brand Guidelines

In short, a brand guidelines document includes everything someone needs to make a piece of content fit with the style of your marketing plan and identity. Include how colors should be used, fonts used, the tone of voice in email and written content, logos, how logos should be placed, and any other specific information that might be needed based on your selling points and industry. Often a bullet point list of major selling points or competitive advantages are included, along with motos or mission statements.
